About Heritage Pen Guide

A look into the materials, dedication, and precision that goes into creating hand-turned wooden writing instruments in Devon.

The Source: Devon Pens Ltd

Heritage Pen Guide is an informational resource curated to celebrate high-end wooden writing pens. The source of our products and company details is Devon Pens Ltd, a boutique woodturning brand operating out of Ivybridge, Devon, United Kingdom.

Founded on a passion for historic preservation and traditional hand-lathe woodturning, Devon Pens Ltd transforms discarded or salvaged pieces of timber into fully functional, high-precision luxury pens. The director, David Alan Ratcliffe, oversees every single pen turned in the local Ermington workshop.

Because we believe wood carries a memory, our catalog focuses heavily on wood types that have distinct narratives—whether it's English Oak salvaged from historic cathedrals, ancient maritime vessels, or native cherry, yew, and beech harvested sustainably from local Devon valleys.

Traditional Techniques

The turning process is entirely manual. A solid piece of selected wood, known as a blank, is cut, drilled, and mounted onto a lathe mandrel. Using sharp wood chisels, the craftsman shapes the contours of the pen body by eye, feeling the subtle resistance of the wood grain.

After shaping, the wood is sanded down through multiple grits of micro-mesh, polished with organic carnauba and beeswax, and pressed with high-quality brass, chrome, or gold-plated metal mechanisms. This painstaking process ensures that the natural beauty of the wood is preserved and protected for decades of daily writing.
